Accomplishments and events for 2009, 2010 and 2011:
- Invited to screen Hollywood East: Florida’s Silent Film Legacy during the Florida Historical Society’s Annual Meeting, May 26-28, 2011.
- Invited to exhibit at the Cult Fiction Drive-In, May 20-22, 2011.
- Invited to screen Hollywood East: Florida’s Silent Film Legacy during the Springfield Home Tour, May 13, 2011
- Assisting with author Barbara Tepa Lupack with the writing of a book on the life and work of Richard Norman and his contributions to film history.
- Hollywood East: Florida’s Silent Film Legacy received a Jacksonville Historic Preservation Award, May 2011.
- Hollywood East: Florida’s Silent Film Legacy screened at the Jacksonville Film Festival (October 2010), Amelia Island Film Festival (March 2011) and Sarasota Film Festival (April 2011).
- Screened The Flying Ace at the University of Miami Communications Week with live musical accompaniment by students from UM’s Frost School of Music, February 2011.
- Exhibited at the MOSH (Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville) Black History Fair, February 2011.
- Film Florida honored Richard Norman with its Film Legends Award, presented at their annual meeting, July 2010.
- In conjunction with the Norman Studios, Arts Institute of Jacksonville has produced Hollywood East: Florida’s Silent Film Legacy, a 30-minute documentary examining Northeast Florida’s film history. The film was produced by students and staff of the Arts Institute of Jacksonville and premiered on WJCT, Jacksonville’s PBS station in Spring, 2010.
- Jacksonville Scene selected the Norman Studios Silent Film Museum as a recipient of its annual benefit gala.
- The Flying Ace screened at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, July 2010
- Stage Aurora Theatrical Co. (www.stageaurora.org), a Jacksonville stage performance company, produced “Richard and Oscar: Filmmaking in Black and White,” a play about the life of Richard Norman and his friendship with Oscar Micheaux.
- Working with filmmaker and Board of Advisors Member Nadia Ramoutar to develop a treatment for a feature film that tells the story of Richard Norman and his relationship with Oscar Micheaux.
- Granted permission to use a poster of The Bull-Dogger in the production of Treme, an HBO dramatic series that follows several musicians struggling with life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
- Working with descendants of Bill Pickett, legendary rodeo performer and star of The Bull Dogger, to produce a documentary on his life, focusing on his work in Norman films.
- Invited to screen The Flying Ace at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in July as part of an academic symposium on the history of black aviators. This event will help raise funds to digitally restore the six-reel master of The Flying Ace held at the Library of Congress.
- Working with Vox Lumiere (www.voxlumiere.com) to potentially bring a series of performances to Jacksonville as a major fundraiser. Vox Lumiere is an internationally touring stage performance company that creates multi-media shows featuring music, dance and laser light shows backed by a silent film projected on huge screens. This benefit will provide a number of tickets free of charge to local low income youth.
- Provided a clip of The Flying Ace to be used in the Sept. 11 episode of Forensic Files, which airs nationwide on Tru TV (formerly Court TV).
- Working with Separate Cinema (www.separatecinema.com) to create a poster exhibit, potentially for installation at the Jacksonville International Airport. The Separate Cinema Archive is an internationally respected collection of more than 25,000 rare film posters, lobby cards and photographs from 30 countries chronicling the black film industry.
- Screened The Flying Ace at the Lincoln Center in New York by invitation of the Film Society at Lincoln Center and Columbia University School of the Arts. This special screening was part of a conference and film series titled Faded Glory: Oscar Micheaux and Pre-War Black Cinema. Febrary2009
- Began participation in the Champion Zone project, a collaborative initiative designed to build the capacity of nonprofits and faith-based organizations serving the 32211 zip code. The project, in cooperation with United Way of Northeast Florida, The Community Foundation, Duval County Public Schools and Jacksonville Children’s Commission, the project seeks to enhance the quality of life and improve student achievement in the area.
- Preliminary agreement with prominent musician Donald Sosin to conduct silent film scoring workshops for Jacksonville students.
- Invitation to speak at University of Miami Film History program.
